London Day 5

The weather was absolutely beautiful and perfect for our day-trip to Canterbury. We took the 9:03 train to Canterbury East station, making it there by 10:30. We found the tourist information centre which turned out to be not very helpful at all. From there we went to Canterbury Cathedral and spent a couple of hours touring the building and the grounds. We had a picnic lunch there as well. After that, we walked through the town looking at shops and other old buildings. We decided not to tour St. Augustine's Abbey, but went by the ruins of Canterbury Castle. Canterbury is a quaint medieval town easily overrun by tourists. Despite this, we enjoyed our visit very much and it was a pleasant escape from the noise and pollution of London. We returned to the Cathedral for Evensong and a lecture on the meaning of the church by Archbishop Rowan Williams. We didn't stay for his second lecture, which allowed us to get back to London by 10:00.
