The Pastor: a spirituality by Gordon Lathrop
This was the first book I read out of my box of books from the Church & Synagogue Library Association. Having read Lathrop in seminary, I was really looking forward to reading his latest work. It is a practical application of the theological concepts he presents in his trilogy: Holy Things, Holy People, and Holy Ground. It is mainly written for a pastoral audience, but there are sections that could be shared with laity. I appreciate how Lathrop uses liturgy as a foundation for spirituality, as it is often overlooked and neglected as a source for spiritual growth and development. When I read books like this, not only do I yearn for a more liturgical and sacramental way of life for myself, but a chance to administer the sacraments. Alas, I know this is not my calling, which is why I am on deacon track instead of elder. Therefore, I must content myself with assisting with the administration, which is spiritually fulfilling in its own way.
