Book 12 for 2005
Birthing from Within by Pam England and Rob Horowitz; ©1998, Partera Press, 309 p.
I've started reading books on childbirth, trying to prepare myself, and this was the first. The authors are also the founders of a childbirth class by the same title, so the book read a little like a textbook or workbook. Very skimmable with exercises, this book encourages the reader in practices of self-reflection and introspection while preparing for childbirth. This is mostly written for people who have an interest in natural, drug-free childbirth, however there is also a chapter on pain-relief options. While it had some new age, earth mother, touchy-feely moments, I thought this book was generally helpful and encouraging. Please note that my opinion may change after I experience the miracle of childbirth.
