Ice can cancel a lot of things, but not dim sum.
Last night, there was an ice storm that came through Atlanta and left everything encased in a thick layer of ice, much like a cryogenics experiment gone bad. Emory University made an announcement yesterday that the University would make the decision about whether or not to close on weekend days, which they were able to do for the first time this morning. Darryl and I had made plans to join a few friends for a dim sum brunch, and much to Darryl's chagrin, the plans were still on despite the ice. Darryl categorically refused to scrape ice, which left me outside in the cold armed with the car key.
The first task was to get the car door open. No small feat because the entire car, doors and all, was covered in a sheet of ice about 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick. I pulled on the door handle to no avail, and decided not to press my luck for fear that the door handle might snap off and then I'd really be in a fix. I did get the driver's door to my car open, but only after trying both the driver's and passenger's doors on Darryl's car. Even with the car running and the defrosters on high, it took almost an hour before we were ready to go. We arrived at the restaurant about 30 minutes after our friends, but made it there without any problems. Coming home, we were going to park my car at the bottom of the driveway, but it started to slip on the ice, so we thought it best to park in the street.
Our little adventure in the ice today left us feeling pretty tired and glad to be back home to enjoy the warmth of an afghan and a cat. It rained most of the afternoon which began to melt some of the ice, but the projected low of 30 degrees with more wintry mix means that things will still be a bit messy tomorrow, perhaps even more messy as the ice will probably be more slick. We got two calls before dinner from church folks to let us know that the church will be closed tomorrow. Looks like another cozy day at home for the ice-bound Atlantans.
