Hired

Just when I thought I might have a normal, average day when nothing much would happen, I had a day like this. It actually didn’t start out that well. My car wouldn’t start, or it would start and then immediately die. Darryl said he didn’t think anything terrible was wrong with it. It was acting out, upset about being driven short distances before being warmed up. Once I got it going, I took the long way to work which only caused me to be 15 minutes late. I think that made my little Saturn happier to be out longer than normal because it didn’t have trouble starting when I came home.

They interviewed two more candidates this morning. I didn’t actually meet either one of them, which was probably for the best. The morning went well; I checked-in and shelved the newly arrived issues and took care of a few miscellaneous things. I ate lunch by myself on the front steps, read my book and passed the time. I came back from lunch to cataloging. Armin asked me if Pat had spoken with me yet, and indicated that he would talk with me sometime today. Pat called me into his office about 2:15 and presented me with an envelope containing my job offer. I was slightly disappointed with the salary, but academic institutions are notorious for under-paying their employees. Pat and I discussed it, and there is a strong possibility for a raise in about six months, so it is best to wait and address the salary at that time. The happy news is that my benefits (health, disability, retirement, etc.) is not taken out of my salary but is in addition to it. The other happy news is that I get to start next Monday! I am thrilled about this because it means that there will be no lapse in my insurance. I went ahead and signed the offer and was welcomed to the staff of Pitts Theology Library. Armin took me out for tea in honor of my new position and we had some great conversation about cataloging and Pitts. Before I knew it, the afternoon had slipped away and I had to leave for an afternoon appointment.

Darryl greeted me when I got home and I told him all about the job and my day. We had leftovers for dinner and I am feeling appropriately drained from all the activity over the past week. After going to Dallas and facing my district committee, singing in church, scheduling my job interview, having my job interview, being offered a job, and accepting a job, going to a concert and circle meeting, I feel like I haven’t had much down time. So, I think I’m going to take a much deserved night off to read and watch some television. Now that all this job stuff is out of the way, life could seem a bit dull and boring. Good thing I have classes starting soon to prevent that from happening!
